Symbian 9 is here!

Hi fringsters!

As you might have guessed… fring for Symbian 9 is already here.

What’s in this version (2.71)?

  • Voice calls and chat over 3G and Wi-Fi
  • Skype and Google Talk integration (Voice and Chat)
  • History (Missed calls, Incoming/Outgoing calls)
  • Improved voice quality compared with previous versions

Note: The Nokia N80 and N80i have been fully signed by Nokia. All other handsets are still in process. Therefore, you will be able to use them (with additional “warning” screen during installation) and GUI might be somewhat offset.

I will appreciate any feedback / insights / heads up and any other info you’d like to share with us (poetry maybe? ) :-)

oh, and even before i get it – not always you get excellent 3g connection and it would be incredibly useful if you let us send voicemail to the google talk users while they are offline (google talk supports is natively) – something like push-to-talk to their email
    Thank you!

it actually stucks al loading screen on my E60

I downlaoded it o.k. (there’s no problem with my wifi), then it opened the reg screen – i put in the name and password, pressed next and than the splash screen again. And the program won’t appear. Even after switching off and on.

Oh, it also says “not compatitible with your phone” while installing – i’m positive I selected “E60″ from the list….

    Hi
I downloaded this version for my E60, but it didn’t connect to skype…. Is there any problem with fring/with my phone? Or the “preview” version means that I can’t use the skype/gtalk yet?

    Please help, thanks

When do you start working on using the camera most of S60 phones have? Would be great to have (Skype) video conference over IP (and not the video calls operator charge big time per minute…).

Congratulations on your excellent work. Telephony is changing wi-fi combined with Fring on Symbians is certainly a milestone. Pocket PC had Skype for years, but PocketPC users are more technical, whereas Symbian is far more popular among lesser- technical oriented.

I have tried Skype between N80 and N93 both on wifi and EDGE. N80 side is almost perfect, on N93 you can barely hear the other party.

It takes sometime to list all my Skype contacts, I have about 15, but that is OK.

    Skype Chat is OK.

Googletalk, I could not register to the service on wifi, but strangely, it registered on EDGE.

Thank you for Fring on Symbian9 and keep up the good work.

I have installed fring on my E60 (version 2 of firmware) and it installed and works without problems but not perfect. The volume, even when increased to max, is too low and its hard to hear the person I’m talking to. Also there seems to be some echo and a little latency. Very good for a beta but a little more work required before final version.

What firmware (software) version does your Fring-ed up N80 have?
Were there any other problems when it came to using Fring (other than the phone freezing)?
Was Fring installed in the phone memory or in the miniSD?

I am very much interested with having Fring in my phone and using them in airports offering free WLAN as I travel a lot.

Also never managed to connect to Skype contacts on 3G, although it does go into Fring network (could make the test call, but didn’t see the Skype users). To see Skype users usually have to unsubscribe from Skype service first and then try to subscribe for 4-5 times before it works. Is it something to do with not enough server capacity or just a bug? Anyone has same problem?

    - Skype Speech quality is not to compare with regular PC to PC calls. This has to be improved.

    - Chat function works great! So Fring has problems with special german characters.

Hi. Have Fring working on N80 and N93i. You can install it on 93i – just play with certificates.
Works OK, but the sound volume is low and you will not be able to use it outside. This is know issue and will be fixed soon.
Another issue is the font size in Chat window. Very small – have to concentrate to read.
One suggestion – if my nickname takes 10 chars, it means that every line in chat window will have 10 chars less for message.
Overall – very good piece of software.

Only two things Fring is missing at the moment:

1 – can’t find a way of swithing to loud speaker (could be a N95 thing though)

2 – why can’t it do Skype video, the phone can do normal video calls so surely the hardware and software are available…?

    Hi,

Fring has been working on my Nokia E90 for a while. I went through couple of updates previously and it was fine until like few weeks ago it stopped working. When I launch Fring, it just shows the startup screen indefinitely. I once left it starting for almost an hour and the startup screen was still there. I didn’t do any other apps installation/removal prior to that. Neither was there any Fring update right before that. It just stop working.

Appreciate if anyone could offer any help.
