fringing ad trials
Hey guys
fring now has millions of fringsters covering the globe and as we grow up we want to make sure that fring remains free to download, free to use for all of our fringsters forever!
So, in line with our biz strategy, we’re about to trial the new fring ads program.
We wanted to give you the heads-up, as you may soon see small clickable advertising banners in the fring chat window, beneath the chat itself. Clicking the ad will open your browser and take you to the advertiser’s site; you may even find extra special offers, cool promos & other nice surprises behind the click from time to time
And, more clicks mean happy advertisers; and happy advertisers mean more resources for us to develop cool new stuff for you to play with in fring!
We’re starting the ad trials with just a small number of randomly selected fringsters each day and we’ve worked hard to make sure that your fringing experience isn’t affected in any way, but as always, we’re really keen to hear your feedback.
The fring team

Why not only text like Meebo? That’s way less annoying in my perception and also I will read them ;p
For banners I have trained myself to not view them. You cannot change that just because you made the best chat download app for the iPhone. If you really want a high click rate and so a ‘biz’ model, just make them relevant and not that annoying.
Good luck with the ads!

(fonte: FringBlog) [...]

Hi there.
I appreciate the need for an ad-supported model for many users, but I’d prefer to pay a small premium on calls or a monthly fee to have an ad free version that I can use to make Skype calls for my business.
Please consider alternative models (i.e. ad-free models) as well (if you’re not already)…
Regards, Grant

Hey Fring,
i think it would be a good idea to offer a free and a paid version. With the paid version you get some extra stuff compared to the free as well as no ads.
Think about it.

I’ve always loved the low data usage of FRING for messenging.
How much more data usage will these adds require?
Why not text versus images?
Maybe it would be better to have a one time fee that we pay for the FRING app to be on a phone like other apps. If we change our phone then we would have to pay again.

It realy pissea me off, to have to be disturbed by connercials. Just offer a version that cost like 20$ and i will get it for life. But like this i will realr reconsider to get rid if it again. I HATE COMMERCIALS. AND I WONT TELL ANY OF MY FRIENDS ABOUT IT ANYMORE. ITS REALY TOO MUCH, SORRY. We have discossed it, and we agree that there should be a piaed version with more feturea and NO commercials.

the ad covers the chat message and makws it unreadable. Also the bandwidth is used. I think a paid version of fring should be an alternative.

On the (by current smartphone standard) small screen of my Nokia N95 the add takes up a quite significant portion of the screen. The ad doesn’t go away as the chat fills up either.

Used to love fring, but unfortuneatly the ads now make it impossible to use for chat. I’d love to use it again if you remove the ads (or perhaps if you made them a once-per-chat thing or less annoying in some other way. With the current setup they are just TOO annoying!)

Sometimes when the ad cannot load (for whatever reason – maybe unable to connect to the ad server), fring hangs and then restarts. Sometimes it restarts my phone (Nokia E71)!!

Please consider an ad-less / paid version for those of us that can’t stand / never click on ads anyway so we can enjoy our IM client / still contribute.

Dear Fring, consider that most of the users using your great product are not on unlimited 3G contracts – therefor paying for each ad displayed – which is annoying.
Even more annoying is the fact the ads take so much space, that i.e. on HTC Hero landscape chat is almost unusable …
Seems it’s time to google for alternatives
